Where to Look for the Next Generation of IT Colombian Female Entrepreneurs

The NextWomen LATAM Theme.

Adriana Galue showcases some of the amazing female IT alumni of Bogota’s Universidad de Los Andes.

I should begin by stating that I decided to write this brief description of talent knowing clearly the bias behind it. I was once a Computer Engineering student at Universidad de Los Andes (Uniandes) located in Bogota, Colombia. If you are looking for IT talent, this is definitely the place to start.

Over the years, Uniandes has brewed some of our best talent in IT. When it comes to women, the list is endless.

I am hoping that in the near future, some of these women will make the decision to lead the next generation of LATAM companies. They certainly have both skills and connections to do so.

From a teaching standpoint we have Luz Adriana Osorio. She graduated from Systems Engineering at the Autonomous University of Manizales, Colombia. She has a Master’s in Computer and Systems Engineering from Uniandes, and a PhD in Information and Knowledge from the Open University of Catalonia, Spain. While at Uniandes, Luz Adriana has served as a Professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering as well as in the Center for Education Research and Training. She is also Director of the Computer Research Laboratory and Education Development. Between 2007 and 2010, she was the Colombian Project Director of Higher Education IT incorporation.  In this role, she led all the strategic plans designed for adequate implementation of IT in Colombian higher education.

With a real understanding of the corporate sector is Marcela Pinilla. She is currently Dell’s CEO for the Colombia – Ecuador region.

She completed a Computer Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration degrees both from Uniandes. She comes to the table with over 15 years of experience in planning, organization and management of operations for corporate sector accounts. She is particularly experienced managing global accounts and government relations in both Colombia and Ecuador. Prior to joining Dell, she served in various positions at IBM Colombia for over 12 years.

Another important player in corporate life is Ines Eugenia Castro. She is currently Director of Education for SAP. Ines is also a Uniandes Computer Engineer with a Master’s in Business Administration. She brings 14 years of experience in business development and implementation of technology projects. She has evolved in different positions within multinational technology giants such as Oracle. Her multifaceted skill set has given her the opportunity to perform successfully in both Commercial and Operations Management positions. Ines has a great ability to adapt and an even greater understanding of the decision-making processes appropriate for LATAM operations. She has a deep understanding of the IT business landscape in general.

Within the financing system we have Rocio Villegas, Operational Risk Manager at Bank of the Republic, Colombia. After finishing a Computer Engineering degree at Uniandes, she obtained a Master’s in Computer Science and Organizational Cybernetics at the same university. She developed professionally at the Central Bank climbing the ladder through several positions such as Engineer at the IT Department, Technical IT Director, Internal Control Manager and Director of Budget.

In the young entrepreneur roster category we have Leandra Rocio Medina, CEO of Wekantu Studios.

Leandra is a Systems Engineer from University Francisco José de Caldas, Colombia. She is an extremely focused individual currently leading IT business development of digital content and video games. As a co-founder of Wekantu Studios, she brings experience in project management, marketing, fast process implementation and curation of compliance indicators.

Last but not least we have Gisella Borja, co-founder and CTO of Dashbell. Gisella recently graduated from TechStars Boston, where she brought Dashbell, an “open table for independent hotels”. Gisella holds a Master’s degree in Computer Software Engineering from Uniandes.

Colombia, where the only risk is wanting to stay!
