GeekGirlMeetup Launches All-Female Tech Conference & Brings Coding Royalty to London
On 29th April, GeekGirlMeetup, the un-conference for girls interested in web, code and start ups will hold its first UK event at the newly opened Google Campus in Shoreditch, London. The event aims to lift more female role-models, create new networks and facilitate active knowledge exchange.
Co-Founder Heidi Harman explains:
"I started GeekGirlMeetup with a friend in Sweden after going to multiple conferences where I was one of the only women. We felt the great need for a forum where we could hang out with other brilliant women and talk about tech - we can see that there is a clear need for it here as well".
The theme for this event is Code Is Queen and all participants are invited to sign up and hold talks about their geeky passion and share their knowledge.
The goal is for participants to create new networks and to elevate female role models in the industry. Also a talent speed-dating will be held, matching developers with business and tech talent.
The event is free of charge so it relys on sponsors, including Google Campus, Thought Works and Society46.
“We're very proud to have Swedish Ellen Sundh as key note speaker. She has led Society 46's team to push the boundaries of the possible: with The Sound of Football project she joined a very short list of people in history - one of who is Jesus - who've helped the blind see. Always at the cutting edge of creative technology, Ellen's truly coding royalty.” says Linda Essen Möller, partner at Society46.
“ThoughtWorks are delighted that Girl Geek Meet Up is coming to London and are proud to support the event. Technology offers such fantastic, dynamic and varied career opportunities and unfortunately there are not nearly enough talented women choosing this path. Women are generally vastly underrepresented at technology conferences so events like this bringing together smart techies to share knowledge and experience is a fantastic idea.” says Katie Partridge, HR at ThoughtWorks
In Sweden GeekGirlMeetup has existed since 2008 and has hosted more that 250 sessions, with almost 20 startups being created as a result. GeekGirlMeetup exists in 4 Swedish cities as well as in Denmark, Finland, and Mexico.
