A DIY Business tool for Entrepreneurs, Brands, Startups and Creatives: The New Verbalizing Grid

Ellen Bokkinga
How do you put your ideas in words? A start-up launched in Amsterdam has developed a tool to help you just with that. Founder Ellen Bokkinga has developed a tool called: the New Verbalizing Grid.
Entrepreneurs, brands, startups and creatives who want to launch their ideas with personal conviction can download the New Verbalizing Grid and help themselves put thier ideas into words. It's Idea Development 21st Century Style, as they say themselves.

What is the New Verbalizing Grid?

This do-it-yourself business tool helps you to get to the core of your new idea: what is it, for whom is it valuable and why, and what’s the philosophy behind it (the WHY). You can use the New Verbalizing Grid for the concept phase, to sharpen your strategy and 'brand story', and as a checklist or simply for inspiration.  As Ellen Bookinga says:
Ideas exist in two forms: the idea in your head and an executed idea. Between the two stand hard work, fun and verbalizing to others and yourself what you want to accomplish.
The challenge with ideas is that they first enter your head and heart, and it takes time and effort before you can concisely verbalize them. Still, this verbalizing is an essential step to clarify your ideas to others, whether they are investors, users or experts.

 Verbalizing Ideas

For over 10 years, concept developer Ellen Bokkinga is fascinated by "verbalizing ideas". What makes it difficult and which methods gets you to the core of your idea.

"Over the years I’ve seen more and more idea developers – from creatives to brands — wrestling with verbalizing their beliefs to the market place. That's why I decided to create a free tool that lets you grasp your own idea in order to make better choices. This way an idea can spread more easily and grow faster. Each idea has the potential to become a strong brand, but it will only be as strong as the stories that are told about it."

DIY New Verbalizing Grid
The Grid consists of 3 columns (1. Discover 2. Conceptualize 3. Inspire & Influence) and 21 questions. Via the Grid you'll have to make concrete decisions about your personal goal(s), the context, your bigger plan, the role of stakeholders, your own actions and more. You can use these answers to sharpen your idea and to process them in your Idea Foundation (Why/How/What) or mission/vision/strategy. In the beginning of 2012 an online document will provide structure to get you through the next steps after going through the Grid.

The New Verbalizing Grid is tested by entrepreneurs and startups during its BETA phase from August to December 2011. Additionally, the Grid was used as a tool during the How to Verbalize your idea in the 21st Century presentation by Ellen at the Internet Week Europe 2011 in London, and by app-developers at the first SellAnApp Live Event in Amsterdam.
