Female Entrepreneurs and the 5 Biggest Obstacles in Business Start-Ups to Overcome
This is a guest article by Alex Papa, Founder of Business Opportunities Expo .
As a family of entrepreneurs and founders of many businesses, my wife and I recently completed a study that examines the relationship between starting a new business and the top 5 risks women take when they start a new business and how these can be reduced or eliminated.
Diane Wakoski a renowned poet once said, “Learning to live with what you’re born with is the process, the involvement, the making of a life”. Entrepreneurship may be inherent, as an inborn element that is structured within your DNA, nonetheless it is the walking through the process of becoming a fully fledged entrepreneur is a part of your journey, and true fulfilment is realized when you succeed in your business ventures.
But the road toward success is never smooth; there will be hurdles, obstacles and seemingly insurmountable challenges along the way.
As a successful entrepreneur I have observed the fatal errors made by a multitude of entrepreneurs, and these critical mistakes tarnished the dreams of a host of potential success stories. To allow your entrepreneurship to flourish, you will need to take cognizance of what these fatal errors are:
- Is Your Idea Feasible?
Humans are creative beings who possess a deep well of ideas. But often one idea marks the end of a woman’s entrepreneurial journey. The exhilaration of a new business idea evokes haste, and leads to the birth of a new business that inevitably fails. This failure is a result of not conducting a thorough feasibility study. Often this initial failure cripples the desire to try again, and silences the dream forever.
Before pursuing any business venture it is imperative to perform an exhaustive feasibility study. A feasibility study is essentially the collection of data that assists in forecasting whether an idea is viable. It precedes any other planning activities, and once the feasibility of an idea is assessed, a calculated decision can be made on whether to implement the idea or abandon it.
- You Are Not Inferior!
Unlike their male counterparts women endure an elevated degree of challenges. The prejudices that exist are a reality and a thorn in the side of many women entrepreneurs. In male dominated industries a female entrepreneur can easily feel intimidated and out of place. These feelings of intimidation can sometimes induce a sense of inferiority.
The discomfort that this causes results in many women exiting a business venture, as they are unable to find any sense of belonging. It must be remembered that the prejudices of others should never leave you disillusioned, but it should rather ignite a heightened desire to succeed. You are not inferior!
- Seek Wise Counsel
The wisdom of the wise can carry your business to greater heights. As an entrepreneur you possess your own strengths and abilities, but every human being has limits. It is pivotal for you to seek counsel from accomplished leaders who can mentor you, and provide the impetus, knowledge, and wisdom that will set your business apart. It often takes courage to admit that we do not possess all knowledge, but it must be emphasized that pride can slice the wings of a potentially lucrative business venture.
- Don’t Spread Yourself Too Thin
Over committing and shouldering an unbearable load will lead to a loss in focus. The enthusiasm of starting a new business injects an unfounded belief that one can do everything. Our existence on this earth is bound by time, and our physical abilities are limited. Spreading yourself too thin can reduce your ability to remain focused.
Many women entrepreneurs are mothers and wives. The demands that these roles exert on women can often lead to the entrepreneur overextending herself. This load, if not managed tactfully, will affect the business negatively.
- Trust is Earned
Misplaced trust can sink a new business. The motives of people can never truly be distinguished. Unfortunately many deceptive individuals will attempt to swindle you as a woman entrepreneur. Placing your trust in a colleague, service provider, or even a business partner requires tact.
Analyze and investigate an individual’s track record before resolving to trust that particular individual. A snake always leaves a trail behind!
By adhering to these 5 key factors you will lower the risk of failure and increase the probability of experiencing the fulfilment of being a successful woman entrepreneur.
