Tips from a Female Entrepreneur on How to Successfully Launch in the US

Lesley EcclesLearning from other entrepreneurs who have done it, is invaluable. Lesley Eccles of Hubdub and Fanduel, one female entrepreneur who has managed to attract venture funding in 2009, presented the do’s and dont’s for a successful launch of an internet business in the US, during Geek 'n Rolla, an event organised by Techcrunch earlier in 2009. The tips are still valid and are listed below.

The team of Lesley Eccles, who's company is currently in the top 100 hottest emerging and most innovative tech companies, chose to launch its service in the US, with the main reason being:

If you want a piece of the pie, get a big pie.

After deciding that the main target audience for their betting service was in the US, they chose to launch in that market only.

With hindsight she provided the following TIPS to LAUNCH in THE US:

1. Launch in one market at one time.
Don’t launch in two markets at the same time. If possible get traction through a launch at a Conference. Hubdub launched at DEMO, which resulted in about 100 media articles, it was expensive to launch there, but worth the PR.

2. Get a PR Agency.
Hubdub spent one-third of its seed money on the launch.

3.  If you launch in the US, travel to the US frequently and set up in the US.
Schedule in advance back to back meetings in order to create efficiency.
4. Get US based advisors and use them, don’t abuse them.
5. Network, network like crazy.
If you have any specific requests, get them out to the person you want to target; in 80% of the cases they reply.

6. Be nice to your users
