Time Magazine 50 best websites 2008

Time has compiled their list with the 50 best websites of 2008. Among them are a few that are founded by women that we thought you may like to know about!

The Omiru site Kiva.org
At Kiva you can loan small entrepreneurs money for their projects.  When you browse entrepreneurs' profiles on the site, you can choose someone to lend to, and then make a loan to them, from $25 and up. Crowd lending for charity.
Jessica Jackley is the co-founder of Kiva. Jessica worked on microfinance projects in rural Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.  She has also worked at the Stanford Center for Social Innovation and at Amazon.com, Potentia Media, the International Foundation and World Vision.

Omiru.com
Fashion-school graduate and entrepreneur Trisha Okubo started Omiru in 2005 to advise on "real style for real people."  Her site helps readers decide what to wear of the runway trends and what not.  It covers figure flattery, fashion trends, runway reports and articles on what is stylish and what not.
Net- a-porter
We covered the highly successful website net-a-porter by  Nathalie Massenet already on TheNextWomen, but for those who missed it: net-a-porter it is an online outlet for designer wear. With millions of customers per month, it is a highly successful venture.  Massenet's newest project, net-a-porter outnet is rumoured to launch in the coming two months.

Petfinder.com
Petfinder.com (also Petfinder.org), is an online database with homeless pets that people can adopt.  It has been in existence for ten years and has helped over 10,000,000 pets find a new home. Betsy Paul and her partner are the founder of the site. They both did not have a history in animal welfare but had skills in computers and graphic design and a desire to do something for these animals.  In 2006 the site was sold to Discovery communications.

Concreteloop.com
Angel Laws is the founder of another website mentioned by Time; Concreteloop.com.  Angel is probably the youngest of the founders mentioned her;  24 years old and founder, editor for Concreteloop and part-time photographer. The site is a  successful black entertainment gossip blog about celebrities.

Anyone a suggestion for the 2009 list?

I'd like to recommend QueensOfVintage.com. It's the first daily global glossy for vintage lovers and it's growing rapidly with loyal readers in 73 countries. It's a back to basics magazine format, soon to add a social network, bringing the world's most stylish vintage wearers together. The publisher is Delightful Media, an at home business with ethical values at heart.
