Online Diary: homeless in Paris

Julie and her sonWhen she left her last Paris home, Julie Lacoste thought it would take a few months to find a new house for her and her two small children. It did not work out that way. Seven months into her 'being homeless' she started a blog, "So that everyone understands what it is like, concretely, to be homeless in Paris today. Homeless but not jobless.

Julie writes weekly, from her brother's old laptop, about her troubles and experiences.  Her blog describes her struggle to find a place to live in Paris, the city she loves,  the logistics of trying to combine her part-time job at the public library and to keep her children (of 2 and 6) in school while finding a roof for them to sleep under every day. It also describes her inability to find a place to live in Paris that she can afford, earning only € 750 a month. Her blog entries talk of having to rely on charities, friends with a spare room or a floor to sleep on or renting temporary accomodation.

While Julie still has not found permanent housing, her story has resonated with many, as there are an estimated 900.000 houses needed to house those living in a similar situation of having to move from one temporary house to another. Her story has been widely publicised in French papers and on French television.

Note TNW: Maybe a book, tv programme or any orther media product will be the result of this blog or even a social media website where people like Julie get connected with (temporary) home owners?
