Building on the web

The Young Vic TheatreOver the second half of the last century female enterprise has flourished throughout the business world. As the web was introduced, companies had to adopt and adapt, harnessing it’s potential. Construction has exploited the potential of the web, realising it to be the perfect place to showcase their project.

Formerly an Associate Director of Ove Arup & Partners, Jane Wernick - whose projects included the Millennium Wheel – set up Jane Wernick Associates in the autumn of 1998. Timed well, as the industry entered the construction boom, Wernick forged a working relationship with renowned architects Zaha Hadid and David Chipperfield, working on such contracts as the aerial walkway at Kew and the renovation and extension of The Young Vic Theatre in London.

In an industry where female presence has always been at a low, Wernick has become a well respected success story of the 21st century. Having achieved numerous awards - including winner of the British Construction Industry 2008 Building Award - she has been instrumental in redressing the gender balance at the top of her profession.
