Female online hero in the arts: we-make-money-not-art
We-make-money-not-art is a one-off online art magazine. It takes some time to understand what it is what's been done. Founder Regine Debatty visits art galleries, listens to conferences, covers art and design events, takes a lot of pictures, interviews creative people, and documents these findings on the website. On Flickr she has an enormous photostream. She has been profiled in Red Herring Magazine and was the subject of a Canal+ documentary and says that she shares 'the use and misuse of technology by artists, designers and media labs researchers'.
At the Alexa statistics site she has a place of 67,000. Covering events around the globe, from nightclub-based installations in Tokyo to academic conferences in Madrid, Debatty won a Webby in 2006 and 2007 for best personal/cultural blog. Debatty studied Classics in Belgium and England; she started in media after several odd jobs, working as a TV presenter on the Belgian national TV and then reporter in Spain, director of TV documentaries and subsequently she got involved in off the beaten track art festivals.
With all the succes of the blog, Debatty is currently working as a new media consultant for a multimedia and virtual reality park in Turin, untill she is able to make money from the blog. The magazine title needs still to turn into reality.
